Overview & Craftsmanship

This Brutus “Assassin of Julius Caesar” AR Roman imperatorial denarius is a modern, hand‑struck sterling silver replica inspired by the ancient Roman silver denarii issued circa 54 BC by the moneyer Marcus Junius Brutus of the gens Junia at the Rome mint. Each piece is individually hammered in solid silver using traditional striking methods, producing irregular flans, varied relief, and surface character comparable to ancient originals. The design reflects documented ancient examples, featuring Libertas on the obverse and a depiction of L. Junius Brutus walking between two lictors on the reverse, with the legend BRVTVS in exergue, faithfully echoing the historic Republican issue.

Unlike cast or machine-pressed copies, hand-struck replicas retain the depth, texture, and individuality characteristic of ancient coinage.

Historical & Numismatic Background

  • The moneyer here is the well known Brutus, one of the most famous Caesar’s murderer. Orphan at a young age, Brutus was adopted by his uncle Quintus Servilius Caepio and not by Julius Caesar as it is believed. Brutus then used the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before taking back his birth name.
  • The gens Junia was one of the most celebrated families at Rome. The gens may originally have been patrician. The family was already prominent in the last days of the Roman monarchy. Lucius Junius Brutus was the nephew of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last King of Rome, and on the expulsion of Tarquin in 509 BC, he became one of the first consuls of the Roman Republic.
