Hand Struck Ancient Coin Replicas

CoinAntix offers hand-struck replicas inspired by ancient Greek and Roman coinage. Traditional hammer-striking brings the designs to life on individually prepared metal blanks. The preparation, striking and finishing give each piece its own shape, centering and surface appearance.

Step 1 Coin Dies

Coin dies carry the designs for the two sides of a coin: the obverse and reverse. The imagery and inscriptions reproduce historical coin types. Individual product pages provide background on the original designs and relevant numismatic references.

Step 2 Metal Blanks

Before striking, metal is prepared into a blank, also called a flan. Small differences in a blank’s thickness and edge shape contribute to the character of the finished coin.

The metal, weight and dimensions are stated in the individual product listing. For an example from our silver range, see the Kroisos light stater replica.

Step 3 Hammer Striking

For our hand-struck replicas, a prepared blank is placed between the obverse and reverse dies and struck with a hand-held hammer. The blow transfers the designs into the metal.

Small variations in the blank’s position and the strike contribute to differences in centering and relief.

Step 4 Inspection and Finishing

After striking, each coin is inspected and finished. Surface treatments, including artificial ageing and chemical patination, are used where appropriate to the intended finish.

Finishes vary across the collection. The individual product photographs and description show the appearance offered for that listing.

Why Individual Coins Vary

Differences in the blank, strike and finishing can affect a coin’s shape, centering and surface appearance. Weight and diameter may also vary slightly between examples.

The Athenian Owl tetradrachm replica is one example from our coin collection.

When a listing uses photographs of a previously struck example, its photo notice explains that the coin supplied may vary slightly. Listings offering the exact photographed specimen are marked “Exact item shown in photos.”

Struck and Cast Replicas

The hammer-striking process described above applies to our hand-struck range. Cast replicas are made through a different process, in which molten metal is poured into a mould.

Clearly Identified Replicas

CoinAntix coins are replicas inspired by historical coinage. They are not sold or represented as original ancient coins.
