Preliminary Coin Identification

Do you have a coin you would like help identifying? We offer a preliminary coin identification service for collectors, inherited collections, and individual coin owners worldwide.

This service is designed for people who want an informed initial opinion on what a coin may be, whether it appears ancient or modern, original or replica, common or potentially more interesting, and what the best next step may be.

Ready to request a first-pass opinion?

Based on the photos and information you provide, We will give a written first-pass opinion covering, where possible:

• likely type, ruler, culture, or historical period
• likely ancient, modern, replica, fantasy, cast, or reproduction status
• whether the coin appears common, collectible, or worth further research
• notable red flags or uncertainties
• practical next-step guidance

This service is suitable for:

• single coins
• inherited coins
• mixed old lots
• unidentified pieces
• possible replicas or fantasy pieces
• early sorting before deeper research or sale

This is a preliminary identification service only.

It is not:

• a formal appraisal
• a certified authentication
• a grading service
• a legal valuation for insurance, probate, customs, or court use
• a guarantee of authenticity, attribution, or market value

All opinions are based on the images and information provided by the client, and some coins cannot be assessed reliably without in-hand examination by a specialist or grading/authentication service.

1. Send clear photos

Please send:

• front and back of the coin
• edge, if relevant
• weight and diameter, if known
• any known history or provenance
• any specific question you want answered

2. Review

We examine the material and provide a written first-pass opinion.

3. Next-step guidance

Where appropriate, We may suggest one of the following:

• further specialist authentication
• collection triage
• sale-route guidance
• consignment help
• sourcing of comparable material

For best results, please provide:

• sharp, well-lit photos
• straight-on images of both sides
• close enough to see detail clearly
• plain background preferred
• no heavy filters or blur

Poor photographs can limit the usefulness of the assessment,

Single coin preliminary identification — €10

Small group / multiple coins — 2–5 coins — €25 — 6–15 coins — €70

Larger mixed lots or inherited collections — Quoted individually

If a group contains mostly low-value common material, we may recommend a simplified review rather than a full per-coin assessment.

Payment is requested in advance before review begins.

Typical turnaround: 2–5 business days.

Complex pieces or larger groups may take longer.

To request a preliminary coin identification, please send:

• clear photos
• number of coins
• weight/diameter if available
• your main question
