Best suited for collectors of Caligula, Agrippina the Elder, Julio-Claudian portraiture and Roman silver denarii.
This Caligula and Agrippina denarius replica brings together the portraits of an emperor and the mother whose ancestry helped support his imperial position. Caligula appears bare-headed on the obverse, while Agrippina the Elder is shown draped on the reverse, her hair arranged in waves and gathered into a long plait behind her neck.
The design follows the ancient silver issue catalogued as RIC I² 8. Its appeal lies in the relationship between the two portraits: the reigning emperor on one side and his deceased mother, explicitly identified by the reverse inscription, on the other.
Each replica is individually hand-struck in sterling silver (.925). The hammering process produces differences in flan shape, centering and relief, giving each piece its own surface character.
The British Museum identifies this issue as a tribute to Caligula’s deceased mother; the dynastic interpretation also appears in published auction commentary. British Museum, CNG catalogue commentary
