This Roman panther chariot decoration is a museum-stamped terracotta reproduction of a late Roman appliqué dating to the 3rd century AD. The original artifact was discovered in the necropolis of Durostorum (modern Silistra, Bulgaria) and is preserved in the Regional Museum of History – Silistra.
Each piece is traditionally cast and kiln-fired in terracotta, resulting in natural variations in surface tone, texture, and detail consistent with authentic Roman ceramic work. Subtle differences between pieces are an inherent and desirable characteristic of traditional ceramic production.
Each piece is produced using traditional ceramic casting and kiln-firing techniques inspired by ancient Roman terracotta methods. The process involves forming the appliqué in a mold, refining the details by hand, and firing it at high temperature to achieve durability and authentic surface character.
Because each example is individually produced:
• No two statuettes are exactly alike
• Minor variations in surface tone and texture are expected
• Sculptural details retain depth and clarity
These qualities distinguish traditionally made terracotta reproductions from modern resin or mass-produced decorative copies.
This reproduction is based on a late Roman terracotta panther appliqué dating to the 3rd century AD, discovered in the necropolis of Durostorum (modern Silistra, Bulgaria). The original artifact, believed to have decorated the ceremonial chariot of a Roman general — possibly a legate of Legio XI — is preserved in the Regional Museum of History – Silistra.
The depiction of a female panther placing her left paw on a cow’s head likely carries symbolic meaning. Panthers were closely associated with Bacchus (Dionysus), and a related chariot appliqué depicting a bust of Bacchus was found at the same site and period, suggesting a ceremonial or religious dimension to the decoration.
