Two Terracota Ancient Theater Masks Classical Antiquity Ancient Greece Unglazed Fired Clay Handmade Museum Reproduction TB0003

44,00

Reproductions of Ancient Greek theater masks circa 600 B.C. handcrafted by a master artisan in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Made from unglazed fired clay the masks are with genuine relief and great detail. This is a reproduction of the original relic in order to duplicate it for open and honest purposes. Such duplicates are made where the original is very rare and replacement is impossible. Reproductions of an ancient relic permit it to be displayed at more than one location or to be handled by the public.

AVAILABLE ONLY FOR PRE-ORDER. This item may take 1-2 weeks to ship. Variations in shape, weight, and color are to be expected as each item is handmade.

Description

Masks served several important purposes in Ancient Greek theater: their exaggerated expressions helped define the characters the actors were playing; they allowed actors to play more than one role (or gender); they helped audience members in the distant seats see and, by projecting sound somewhat like a small megaphone, even hear the characters better. In a tragedy, masks were more life-like; in a comedy or satyr play, masks were ugly and grotesque. Masks were constructed out of lightweight materials such as wood, linen, cork, and sometimes real hair. Unfortunately, they lacked durability, and not many have survived.
Measurements: Mask left Height 8.55cm with a weight of 45.80gr. Mask right Height 9.4cm with a weight of 52.90gr.
