Trajan was endowed with great military skill and came to understand the Roman military system very well. It is perhaps his military prowess that made Nerva, an emperor with little military background, choose him as an heir. It was important to imperial power that victories over enemies of Rome be remembered, and coinage was an easy way to spread the memory of these victories.
